Now...let's get to quilting!
For this quilt, we will need:
One Unique Fabric Panel (29" x 39") or 1 yard of fabric cut to the specified measurements
(5) 2/3 yard fabric cuts in coordinating fabric*
*Note on fabric cuts: This measurement includes the 9" x wof of fabric you need for the binding. If you would like to use another color, you will need 2/3 yard of fabric for the binding. This quilt is created with a scrappy back. You need 63 total blocks. While one of the fabrics is intended for the binding, you will have extra fabric left over if you would like to include more of one color. You can also sub in 2 charm packs.
Directions for Cutting:
assuming 42" wide fabric
Cut fabric into (2) 5" x WOF strips
Sub cut strips into 5" blocks (total of 16 blocks per fabric)
Cut (4) 2.25" binding strips
Assembly:
Arrange your blocks into a 7 x 9 layout. In my quilt, I chose to do a stair step pattern. You can also choose to do a random layout. Make this quilt your own! The beauty of this design is that you can customize it however you want. Since we are using a panel for the front, you can also choose to include a border around it, then add more squares to the back for a bigger size. Piece together your quilt back.
Number of blocks needed for stair step pattern:
Fabric 1: 12 blocks
Fabric 2: 13 blocks
Fabric 3: 13 blocks
Fabric 4: 13 blocks
Fabric 5: 12 blocks
For specific instructions, tips and more about piecing fabric, binding and quilting, I highly recommend you check out my Beginner Quilting Series! It is a comprehensive guide to creating a quilt from start to finish. Whether you're wondering how to efficiently piece together a quilt or quilt it with your walking or free-motion foot, this series covers it all. Plus, it's free!
Next, take your fabric panel and iron. We will be creating a quilt sandwich using our panel, batting, and newly pieced backing.
I had a hard time deciding how I wanted to quilt this! Typically, with pieced quilts like this, I do a cross hatch design with a walking foot. However, I didn't want the quilting lines running across this cute panel! Instead, I went a little quilt crazy. With different colored threads, I decided to trace all of the elements on the quilt! It was a little busy in the back, but I definitely love that the panel isn't covered up with quilting, but instead, enhanced. Let me know what you think below!
